I was totally stupid and missed the cutoff for downloading the Skyward Sword Update + the Wii U Transfer tool after the Wii shop closed. Is there any way to download these with homebrew? I am considering hacking my Wii, because why not? This isn't entirely true.only purchases(with existing credit) are shutting down in january. Nintendo has mentioned shutting downloads down sometime after that, but has given no specific dateOn January 30, 2019, we plan to close the Wii Shop Channel, which has been available on Wii systems since December 2006. We sincerely thank our loyal customers for their support. You can still add Wii Points until March 26, 2018, and purchase content on the Wii Shop Channel until January 30, 2019.
In the future, we will be closing all services related to the Wii Shop Channel, including redownloading purchased WiiWare, Virtual Console titles, and Wii Channel, as well as Wii System Transfer Tool, which transfers data from Wii to the Wii U system. Not necessarily, according to the:You can still add Wii Points until March 26, 2018, and purchase content on the Wii Shop Channel until January 30, 2019. In the future, we will be closing all services related to the Wii Shop Channel, including redownloading purchased WiiWare, Virtual Console titles, and Wii Channel, as well as Wii System Transfer Tool, which transfers data from Wii to the Wii U system. So while the ability to purchase content ends in 2019, you'll still be able to re download purchased stuff at least for a little while after that. Presumably purchased titles will still be available to use thereafter?I ask because I decided not to transfer across the data, so I still power up the old Wii for its VC catalogue. I was under the impression some titles aren't available on the Wii U so I thought I may as well keep them all in one place.
Oddly enough I actually prefer the widescreen mode of the Wii vs the higher res of the Wii U for N64 titles on my TV.For me the VC is a major missed opportunity for Nintendo. They've been so fixated on the short term returns each time trying to get customers to buy and re-buy their titles, that now it seems we've all but lost the VC on the Switch.Imagine if Nintendo had seen the VC almost as it's version of iTunes (I'm not an Apple fan, but stick with me). A platform to purchase all your past Nintendo titles, which then work across many different platforms with different benefits to each system. There should even be a VC app for phones with which you can at least log in and view your titles and browse the shop, lining up and making new purchases. It had colossal potential.
They could have made it the defining way to retro game, artwork, video clips of different titles, a review section, etc etc.It seems Nintendo are so concerned with getting it's customers to buy Mario 64 many times over that they've missed the real boat of creating a platform customers will treasure forever. In the long term customers would spend even more, as they would continually add to their libraries as we progress over the years. Newer titles would fall into the retro category in time too. Pretty soon we would be buying GameCube, Wii, and Wii U titles on there too.Hmm I've ended up rambling.
Like other have mentioned, it's all or nothing. Once they are trasnffered to the Wii U, you can buy an upgrade for the Wii U version of games that are available in both.
Iirc it's $1 for Nes games, $1.50 for SNES and $2 for N64 games. The difference is that normally you would only be able to play them in wii mode, which means you can only use wii controllers as well. If you upgrade to the Wii U VC, you will be able to launch it directly like any wii u game and you will be able to use the gamepad or other wii u controllers with them.
